The U.S.S. Ralph Talbot and her Gallant Men
From Pearl Harbor on December the 7th to the end of World War II the U.S.S. Ralph Talbot (DD390) fought the fanatical Japanese in battle after battle in the Pacific. The U.S.S. Ralph Talbot sustained heavy damage, crippling her, when she single handed took on the escaping Japanese fleet that had attacked the U.S. Fleet at Savo Island. War Patrol of the PCE(R)852
The PCE(R)852 bristled with guns topside; there was no medical red cross on the ship even though the deck below the 40 and 20 mm guns aft contained a 75 bed sick bay with a small operating room. The 852 was a rescue ship; a ship that rushed into battle with her guns blazing to help fight off attacking Japanese kamikazes even as the crew labored to bring aboard the wounded and survivors of a ship crashed by a kamikaze.
This is a story of ships and men: of Army and Marine casualties taken off of invasion beaches, of Maritime and Navy men taken off of blazing, sinking or stricken ships crashed by a Japanese kamikaze or pulled out of oil covered water.

This is the memories of Lieutenant Raymond D. Malott, MD who went straight out of medical school into the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to the rescue ship, U.S.S. PCE(R)852. Dr. Malott has included with his story the personal writings of Toshio Torii, a Japanese pilot attached to the Kamikaze Ohka Special Attack Squadrons Jinrai Corps. Toshio Torii relates the incredible stories of the Japanese kamikaze raids made by his Corps, including names as well as a vivid description of the attack and who climbed into the Ohka bomb to guide it to the target on its suicide mission.
Dr. Malott correlates the raids flown by Torii's squadron and the rescue missions of the U.S.S. PCE(R)852. Here is both sides of the story as experienced by an American and a Japanese.

The DD360 was the first of the Selfridge class of destroyers. She was designed and built as a barrage ship; one that could bombard the shore emplacements in support of invasion forces. She was destined for much more. She fought from day one of WWII to the surrender of the Japanese.
This is a story of the men of the DD360 and her mission; it is a minute by minute account of the life of a ship and her crew.
